The Louisiana Senate and Governmental Affairs Committee advanced a new congressional map that gives Republicans five of six districts and collapses one majority-Black district, following last month's Supreme Court ruling that the previous map improperly relied on race in redrawing boundaries under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, according to CBS News. Said Rep. Cleo Fields, whose district was dissolved: "The demographics of this state demand fair representation. The history of this state demands it. And the people of Louisiana — all of the people — deserve nothing less."
