Redistricting Methods Vary Widely Across 50 States

Thirty-three states give their legislatures primary control over congressional redistricting, while nine use independent or politician commissions and two others employ hybrid systems, according to Ballotpedia. The single-member district requirement now standard in every state was not made permanently mandatory by Congress until 1967, with the passage of the Uniform Congressional District Act — 125 years after the Apportionment Act of 1842 first imposed it.
