Trump's Base Is Pricing Out His Coalition Before 2026

Focus groups conducted by Sarah Longwell and reported in The Bulwark (May 7) show measurable defection among Trump's own voters, driven by rising gas prices, grocery costs, and the economic fallout from the Iran war — precisely the issues Trump ran hardest on in 2024.

The Longwell data captures something beyond generic disapproval: these are voters who bought the 'no more forever wars' and 'I'll lower your costs on day one' commitments specifically. Disappointment has curdled into anger. That's a different emotional register than buyer's remorse — it's the feeling of having been lied to.

The strategic read: affordability-plus-war is a two-front problem that doesn't have a messaging fix. You can't spin a gas pump. If this frustration holds into fall 2026 filing season, House Republicans in suburban and exurban districts face a base-turnout problem, not just an independent-voter problem — and those are two very different campaigns to run.
