Asian Navies Stay Home as Hormuz Crisis Deepens

South Korea told the Trump administration it would "review" a U.S. request to join naval operations in the Strait of Hormuz after a South Korean vessel came under fire there, underscoring how little Asia has contributed to securing a waterway it depends on more than any other region, according to War on the Rocks. Said Singapore Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan: "The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is, in a sense, an Asian crisis" — a characterization the numbers support: 95 percent of Japan's crude oil imports and 70 percent of South Korea's originate in the Persian Gulf.
